Our tagline is “balancing home an hobbies”.  The reason we picked this premise for our blog is not because we are experts at it (Shocker!), but because it is something we are constantly working at.  It’s difficult to do and an ongoing process, so we figured we could blog about it for years…

Caroline and I were discussing the blog, and one of the things we were both thinking is that we need to stop feeling like we can only blog when we have a finished project to show off.  That is certainly not our real lives, and we don’t want to come across as “look at me, and all of my perfect projects!”

So, for the sake of authenticity, I’m going to write my first “everyday life” type of post on this blog.  You know, the nitty gritty of how the balancing act really goes down.  Beware, it’s messy!

Okay, confession time.  One of my least favorite household chores is doing the dishes.  I think it is the fact that they are kind of relentless, because we just seem to keep eating, dang it. I tend to get get overwhelmed easily, and if I get lazy at all, those 2 plates in the sink seem to multiply at an alarming rate. Sigh.  I just struggle.  Housekeeping is not my strongest suit.

Look what I did today. I wish I could say that I cooked a 6 course meal this morning and that’s why every pot I own needed washed.

Moving on…

I have been struggling with getting my exercise in since we moved a couple of months ago.  I’ve gone on a run twice in that time, and did about 12 minutes of cardio. Total! Ah. I need to get to work.  Because as children do, mine pointed out that I must be growing another baby in my belly, because it is big! Thanks boys! (I’m not).  I think the closer we get to 30, the more our metabolisms slow down.  I’m sure it only gets worse from here.

My oldest is a week and a half into kindergarten! I’m thankful that his school doesn’t start insanely early, like some I’ve heard of, or have a crazy massive pick up process like some.  He’s been on a walker and cast or boot the whole time, and that has been interesting.  Overall I think he is a champ, though we’ve had our trying moments. I had to pick him up and carry him up to the school doors today, because he didn’t want to go.  Poor guy. I was glad to hear from his teacher that he had a great day though.

I’m still working on getting my schedule figured out for the school week.  It seems harder than it should be, and my littlest guy has missed one of his naps almost every day since school started.

But the beautiful thing about life, is that in the blur of papers to sign, dishwashers to load, lunches to pack, etc., we are blessed with small simple moments. Life stops for a second, so a little boy can give you a handful of dandelions.

And there are times that life feels burdensome.  Dare I share, that the other night as I let out a few overwhelmed tears in bed I thought, “Motherhood is a burden.” It is one I asked and prayed for, and one I would take on again in heartbeat if given the chance to start over. But it is a burden on your heart if you care at all for your children. Almost immediately after having that thought, I was blessed with a bit of inspiration.  We are given burdens, so that we can recognize our need for the Savior.  He said, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11: 28-30)

So don’t give up when the balancing is tough! Thank goodness we have someone to lean on!
